Firstly, entering the watch boutique is almost like entering some secret club. You choose a nice watch for yourself, and then suddenly seller starts talking to you about the “tourbillon”, “retrograde”, and other things that you do not understand. And then your head starts spinning. It is rather boring trying to pretend that you know everything while you do not have a clue. I know the feeling of nodding like a bobble doll.
Still, these are not magic spells. They are additional functions of the watch. You may think of your watch as of a smartphone, and these complications – of the additional applications. You do not have to be a computer programmer to install Facebook, and you do not need to get a degree in horology to wear a watch.
Chronograph is one of the most popular complications. It includes two or three additional dials on the watch face. It is quite literally a stopwatch. Thus, all you need to do is press the button and the second hand will start spinning. Thus, it helps you to determine how much time will pass before your Uber comes.
Then comes Moonphase complication with the little window with the picture of the moon and the stars. It calculates lunar cycles, some sounding romantic but totally useless thing unless you are a werewolf or a seafarer. People purchase it simply because it looks amazing on their wrists.
When you see the watch with a window containing the number changing every day, it is a Date complication. As you might guess, this one is pretty easy to understand. Perpetual Calendar is its more advanced and thus much more expensive older brother. It knows how many days are there in each month, including the leap year. Thus, you will not have to adjust your calendar yourself, since this complication is for those having much money to earn to worry about the adjustment of their watch at March 1.
When you hear the word “Tourbillon”, your eyes probably widen because of an astronomical price you have to pay for this complication. It is basically a spinning cage with spinning balance wheel, compensating the influence of gravity. It was invented in the 19th century to increase accuracy of pocket watches. Today it does not bring any performance improvement, but simply makes the watch look amazing and reveals the genius of the watchmaker.
GMT complication is a must for those who frequently travel. It allows tracking the time in two different time zones using additional hand or rotating bezel. In other words, you may monitor the time in your hometown being in Milan and drinking your espresso. This complication is especially useful for those, who travel a lot for work or have families in other countries.
Power Reserve indicator is the battery percentage indicator for mechanical watches. It is usually represented by a little gauge on the dial of the watch, which indicates the amount of power left. All you have to do when it becomes low is to wind your watch. This complication will help you not to embarrass yourself in front of your clients.
Now you know what these complications are about. Do not let their intimidating names scare you. These are just some gadgets making your life easier or giving you more style.
