How to Disagree With Someone Without Losing Their Respect

But now let us talk about honesty. You are discussing productively in the conference room; your colleague comes up with an absolutely ridiculous idea. You want to shoot down his ideas with those verbal bombs. Try not to do it.

Defeating somebody in the argument is easy, while staying in good relations is hard work. In case you manage to demolish your colleague in the argument, you may defeat him in the battle, but for sure you will lose the war. Nobody likes to work with somebody, who wants to be right at any cost.

This is what differentiates an experienced businessman from a novice. First of all, you should accept their ideas and then demolish them. Start with accepting their idea even in the case, when you find it completely crazy.

For example, you can say: “I see your point of view, but there is another solution of this problem”. Just this sentence helps you disarm people right away. They stop protecting their ego and start listening to your logical argumentation. It is just a psychology.

Moreover, you have to control your tone of voice. Everything can be said respectfully. Try not to use sarcasm because it is the lowest kind of humor and the quickest way to lose a client.

Also, try not to focus on the person, not the problem. Do not tell them: “You are wrong”; tell them: “According to this data, the results are not similar”. In such a way, you make your discussion more professional and objective. No one feels offended hearing only about the spreadsheet, not the person.

In general, reputation is your currency in the business environment. It is better to be known as a man of solutions, not just a troublemaker. Now disagreement is your superpower. Use it.
